The latest research indicates that learning disability can occur when the brain is still developing: before, during or soon after birth.
- Before the birth processes can happen to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) that can cause a learning disability. A child may be born with a learning disability if mother has an accident or illness while she is pregnant. It can also happen if the unborn baby develops certain genes. Think of genes that are like chemicals in our bodies which contain information about us, like how we look.
- People are born with a learning disability if they fail to obtain sufficient oxygen during childbirth, or are born too early.
- Indeed after birth, a learning disability can occur by early childhood illnesses
